Why Your Washer Won’t Drain

The most common causes are a clogged pump filter or coin trap catching lint, coins, and small items; a blocked or kinked drain hose; a failed drain pump that has burned out or jammed; a faulty lid switch or door lock that prevents the machine from advancing to the drain and spin cycle; or a clogged drain line where the hose meets your home plumbing. On front-load machines, a small sock or underwire trapped in the pump is a surprisingly frequent cause.

What You Can Check First

Make sure the drain hose is not kinked and is not pushed too far down the standpipe, run a spin-only cycle to see whether the machine attempts to drain, and check whether the door or lid is latching fully, since many washers will not drain if they think the door is open. If you can safely access the pump filter, clearing it sometimes resolves the issue, but a burned-out pump or failed lid switch needs professional replacement.
