Oven Not Heating? Common Causes and Fast Repair
An oven that will not heat, or one that never reaches the temperature you set, brings cooking to a halt. Platinum Appliance Repair diagnoses and repairs oven heating problems same-day across Northern Virginia on gas, electric, and dual-fuel ranges and wall ovens.
Why Your Oven Isn’t Heating
On electric ovens, the most common causes are a failed bake or broil element, which often shows visible breaks or blistering, or a faulty temperature sensor that misreads the oven and prevents proper heating. On gas ovens, a weak or failed igniter is by far the most frequent cause; when the igniter is too weak to open the gas valve, the oven never lights. A bad control board, a broken door hinge that leaves a gap, or a miscalibrated temperature sensor can also cause an oven to underheat or heat unevenly.
What You Can Check First
For electric ovens, look at the bake element while it should be heating; if it does not glow evenly or shows a break, it needs replacement. For gas ovens, listen and watch for the igniter glowing when you start the oven; if it glows but the burner never lights, the igniter is likely too weak to open the valve. Uneven or off temperatures often point to the sensor.
